Personal injury and wrongful death laws can lead to financial restitution in the wake of burn injuries
Many Americans in Missouri, Illinois, and beyond often use products with the reasonable expectation that they will be safe. The tragic truth, however, is that some products sold to consumers are extremely dangerous and can lead to severe consequences such as burn injuries or even death. This proved to be the case for one woman who was serious burned by a product called a gel fuel pot. Unfortunately, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a product recall of many of these gel fuel pots back in 2011—one week after the woman suffered her catastrophic burn injuries.
At the time of the life-altering accident, the woman had recently moved in with her fiancé, along with three of her four sons. They had some friends over to visit mere weeks after moving in. She had purchased the ceramic gel fuel pot because she found it attractive. The ceramic pot would display various colors of flame when it was lit. When the get-together ended, the couple at first extinguished the burning fuel pot. However, they soon returned to enjoy themselves a little longer. It was at this point that the fiancé took the fateful step of refilling the ceramic pot.
The instant that the woman’s fiancé placed more gel into the pot, catastrophe struck. Gel fuel immediately ignited once more and splashed onto the woman’s chest. She understandably fought to brush the fuel off of her body, but this proved unsuccessful as the flaming gel fuel rushed down her arm. Considering that this type of fuel can reach temperatures upward of 900 degrees, the woman suffered extensive burns over 25 percent of her body. The woman’s panic caused her to at first run as she burned. Fortunately, her 16-year-old’s quick thinking to reach his mother and use his shirt to put out the flames saved her life. Even when she told him that she knew she was dying and loved him, he refused to give up hope. He told her that he would not let her die—and she did not.
