Other firefighters saved people from apparent suicide attempt and various home fires
St. Louis firefighters often put their lives on the line for others as a regular part of their duties. Recently, eight firefighters from the St. Louis Fire Department were honored by Firehouse Magazine after receiving Firehouse Magazine’s 2014 National Heroism Award. The firefighters were recognized for several different lifesaving acts, ranging from saving a woman from an apparent suicide attempt on the Eads Bridge to pulling people from a burning vehicle after a car accident.
On Dec. 20, three off-duty firefighters who were traveling to work passed by a single-car accident on North Broadway in St. Louis. They rushed into action to save the three people who were trapped in the burning vehicle. Aided by bystanders, they found bricks to help extract the vehicle occupants to rescue them from the flames. All three people inside the vehicle were saved, owing their lives to the brave and quick actions of the firefighters and those who helped them.
Also in December, two other firefighters worked diligently to assist a 21-year-old woman who was visibly upset when she climbed up a high-voltage power line stretching across the Eads Bridge. The two spent several hours talking to the woman and were ultimately successful in convincing her to come down rather than harming herself. Another firefighter pulled an unconscious child out of a burning home; that child made a complete recovery from his ordeal in the three-story house.
Yet another firefighter jumped into action to save a fellow firefighter when he heard moaning while working at the scene of an apartment fire. He realized that the crew member had gone down and he pulled that colleague away from the burning building. The remaining firefighter who was honored was working at a house fire when he successfully found an unconscious victim and brought him to safety. He also helped revive that man, who was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.
Without the brave actions of these St. Louis area firefighters, some or all of these people would have lost their lives, especially the car accident victims who were trapped in that burning vehicle. Suffering through a serious crash like that can leave people scrambling to pick up the pieces of their lives. Those who are hit by financial costs like medical and other expenses when such a collision or fire is caused by another party’s negligence may be relieved to know they can seek reimbursement by filing a civil lawsuit.
