There is no good evidence that IVC filters should be used for bariatric surgery patients (stomach surgery – like gastric bypass or lap-band surgery).
Studies have shown that implanting blood clot filters into bariatric patients does not reduce the risk of pulmonary embolisms, and results in an increased risk of the complications associated with the filters.
So why would you doctor implant a filter? Simple—the money. Manufacturers push for all kinds of new ways to use their products so they can sell more of them. And the more procedures doctors can do, especially with manufacturers that give them free stuff, the more money they make.
If you have had a vena cava filter implanted when you had weight loss surgery, you need to talk to a lawyer.
You may have a claim for damages.
