Just 8 months later, slain woman’s 21-year-old son dies in bicycle accident
A recent car accident in St. Louis, Missouri seems particularly tragic in the light of the steps the man who lost his life was taking steps to turn his life in a more positive direction. The man, only 21, died after a fatal car crash involving a westbound vehicle while he was traveling east on Page Boulevard. A second vehicle ran over the man’s bicycle just after the first collision. While the initially survived the bicycle accident, he succumbed to his injuries just 10 hours later.
A detail that makes this case even more heartbreaking is that the man’s 44-year-old mother died only eight months earlier after an out-of-control driver hit her while she was walking along the side of the road in Columbia, Missouri. According to reports, her 21-year-old son had recently obtained a new job as a janitor for a nonprofit organization that provides training and other forms of assistance to low-income individuals. He had apparently gone through a short stay in jail a few years ago for misdemeanor assault. In the time since, he had apparently moved his life in a new direction after meeting his girlfriend in a drop-in shelter, moving in with his aunt, and getting the new job he was so excited about.
In his mother’s fatal car crash, a 17-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle she was driving and swerved off the road. She struck the 44-year-old woman and the man with whom she was walking along the shoulder of the road. The man fortunately survived the collision. Police later charged the driver with misdemeanor careless and imprudent driving.
It seems especially tragic for this family to have to endure the loss of two such young individuals in an extremely brief period of time. Grieving family members can also be hit hard by unexpected medical and funeral expenses in an already difficult time. Missouri and Illinois laws do provide victims and surviving relatives the opportunity to seek restitution in a civil court of law. Although filing a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit won’t return a lost loved one’s life, it can help provide a measure of financial comfort as a family tries to move forward.
