Risperdal is the trade name for risperdone. It is an antipsychotic drug. Such drugs are also referred to as neuroleptics or major tranquilizers. Risperdal is a powerful dopamine agonist, which means it blocks dopamine receptors in the brain. In other words, it prevents dopamine, a chemical in the brain associated with feelings of reward or pleasure from having an effect. This is the opposite of what happens in addictive drugs, like cocaine, that directly increase dopamine in the brain.
Risperdal was initially approved only to treat schizophrenia. In later years, the FDA approved it for use in autism and bipolar disorder. It has never been approved to treat any other diseases. The FDA has required it to have a special warning that it is not indicated for use in elderly patients with dementia.
Risperdal can lead to a variety of serious complications, including weight gain, diabetes, tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, gynecomastia, stroke, and even death. If you or someone you love has suffered from any of these consequences after taking Risperdal, you may be entitled to a monetary award.
